Mahmoud Ghazal Calls for Clearer Mechanisms to Support Exporters in Taxation and Customs

In response to statements made by Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Special Envoy on Financing for Sustainable Development, regarding the absence of real growth in the Egyptian economy, Eng. Mahmoud Ghazal, CEO of MGS Industry Group and a member of the Textile Industry Chamber, affirmed that the textile and export sector is indeed delivering tangible results on the ground.
Ghazal explained that external factors have contributed to enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian exports, including the tariffs imposed by the previous U.S. administration on some competing countries, as well as the advantage of dealing in foreign currency, which provides inflows of hard currency and supports economic balance.
He pointed out that the state is exerting great efforts to address exporters’ challenges, yet the current procedures remain slow compared to the pace of global changes. He added that the most pressing difficulties lie in taxation and customs, stressing that quick fixes in taxation are not effective. What is needed, he said, are fundamental reforms to restructure the relationship between taxpayers and the state, ensuring transparency, fairness, and efficiency.
Ghazal also called for regular direct meetings between officials and industry stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of making these meetings diverse and inclusive—not limited only to members of export councils, but also involving a broader perspective that brings together various exporters and sector players. This, he said, would allow for the collection of wider insights and proposals to help policymakers design more effective strategies for the benefit of industry and exports.
He concluded by saying: “If we can address these internal challenges in an organized and timely manner, the export sector—particularly textiles—can become a key driver of real growth in the Egyptian economy.”
